Founded in 1991, the purpose of the Sylvania Area Historical Society is to work toward the preservation and collection of materials and items concerned with the development, history, and genealogy of Sylvania, Ohio and its surrounding area. It is the goal of the Sylvania Area Historical Society to work toward the preservation of the past so that present and future generations might have evidence of their great heritage, thus making the present more meaningful to all.
Want to learn more? Here are few videos and links that explain what we do:
- Harroun Barn Historic Marker Dedication: The Sylvania Historical Society played a key role in sponsoring this historical marker.
- Association Cemetery Tour: Our volunteers hosts tours of our area historic cemeteries each year.
- Sylvania Heritage Center Museum: Our Heritage Center Museum preserves Sylvania's history.
We offer informative public programs on the third Wednesday of March, May, July, September, and October – usually at the Sylvania Heritage Museum located at 5717 North Main Street in downtown Sylvania. You're invited to gather with others to share stories, learn about the people and events that make Sylvania uniquely Sylvania, to do research and to explore our impressive collection of local artifacts. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter to receive notices of upcoming meetings and special events. These programs are free and open to the public. Of course, donations are always appreciated. Go to our Events Calendar for descriptions of upcoming programs and events.
The Sylvania Heritage Center Museum is open Wednesdays from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p. and by appointment. Tours are available free of charge. The museum usually closes the last week in November for holiday decorating -- December's schedule will be posted. The museum is also closed in January and August. However, if you have research to work on, please contact us and we can arrange an appointment.
Volunteers make it possible for us to dedicate ourselves to the work of preserving and sharing our local history. We offer a wide variety of opportunities to participate occasionally or on an ongoing basis with programming, collections and events. Join our community of educators, collection enthusiasts, historic interpreters, and historians. Call us at 419-517-5524 if you are interested in volunteering.
Students of all ages will find that our research library and collections offer extensive resources for research. In addition to self-led tours, the Sylvania Area Historical Society offers docent-led tours and permanent and revolving exhibits as well as talks and activities to inspire your curriculum.
